Pia, NICU Mum & PKC Knitter

World Prematurity Day is coming up on November 17th and the theme this year is ‘a strong start for a hopeful future’. At PKC, we are sharing stories from our community in the lead up including preemie babies, our wonderful knitters and supporters.

Pia’s daughter was born premature, and this weekend turns 11 years old!

Pia is a supporter of PKC, she knits for us and experienced the NICU firsthand with her Daughter who is now 11 years old.

What does World Prematurity Day mean to you and your family?
Pia: We were still in NICU during world Premmie day and I remember meeting a 10 year old girl who had been born Premmie and her mother being so proud of her. When living day to day, 10 years ahead seemed so distant, but the years have raced by.

Did you receive any knitting and what are your memories of this?
Pia: The beautiful warm perfectly sized knitting was so memorable when our daughter was in NICU Palmerston North 11 years ago this weekend! All her other clothes were so big and floppy but the ribbed singlets were so snug and warm, plus they grew with her. So special.

What message would you like to share with other parents currently going through a NICU journey?
Pia: Ask lots of questions. If you’re unsure or confused about something or need information repeated, just ask. I found NICU staff to be the most patient and knowledgeable people.
