Kia ora! We are Premmie Knitting Club.
A virtual tribe of knitters
knitting for premature babies and fundraising for preemie related causes.

We’re celebrating 10 years of wrapping Aotearoa’s tiniest babies in warmth, love, and hope through our knitting donations and fundraising.

To mark this milestone, we’re aiming to donate as many peggy square blankets as possible to hospitals across Aotearoa and we’d love your help!

The ask of you

Blankets are always needed by the hospitals we support.

The idea is that we’ll have blankets made up of squares knitted by everyone in our community.

Our goal is to create hundreds of blankets to donate to Neonatal Intensive Care Units across Aotearoa.

Questions? please email hello@premmieknittingclub.org

We’re asking everyone to knit one peggy square.

WHAT’S A PEGGY SQUARE BLANKET?
The project consists of twenty knitted squares, each measuring 15 x 15cm, which are later joined to form the finished blanket. We’d love you to knit just one square, but feel free to knit as many as you like!

WHY PEGGY SQUARES?
Peggy squares are simple and manageable in size for knitters of all levels. They are a perfect starting point to learn basic knitting techniques, build confidence, while contributing to a worthy cause! For expert knitters, they are also a great way to use up your spare yarn.

DETAILS

  • You’ll have from April to June (around 8 weeks) to create one or more peggy squares.

  • You’re welcome to get family, friends or colleagues involved and make your square a team effort.

  • You don’t need to sew anything – our amazing volunteers will join all the squares into blankets. If you’d prefer to sew as you go, a finished blanket is made up of 20 squares.

  • We’re happy to receive crochet squares as well as knitted squares.

Need wool and needles? We’ve made you a pack.

HOW TO
KNIT A
PEGGY SQUARE

The Pattern

    • 15x15cm squares

    • 20 squares make a blanket

    • Size 8 (4mm) needles.

    • Any colour 8ply wool (double knitting, DK weight)

Wool is preferred by the hospitals but some will accept acrylic.

  • Everyone’s knitting tension is slightly different and not all 8ply yarns are created equal. You may need to adjust the number of stitches you cast on so that your square is 15cm wide when it is finished.

  • Pattern designed by Natalie Iogha

    • Cast on 30 stitches.

    • Work 60 rows garter stitch (knit every row), or until your work measures 14.5cm. Once you have completed your cast off row, the final square size should be 15cm.

    • Cast off 30 stitches.

Wool is preferred by the hospitals but some accept acrylic.

About Premmie Knitting Club

PKC is a registered NZ charity and a virtual tribe of knitters knitting for premature babies and fundraising for preemie related causes. We are an entirely volunteer (and women run) organisation.

Each year, we donate thousands of knitted items to support Aotearoa’s most vulnerable babies in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), anything from blankets to singlets, cardigans and more, we work directly with the hospitals to understand what is most needed.
