Our Impact

We donate thousands of much needed knitted items annually and we also provide support by fundraising for much needed items that help hospitals support premature babies and their families.

These items have been purchased predominantly through the sale of our fundraising merchandise and one off donations.

Here’s some of PKC’s recent impact:

 2025

1. A humidifier for Middlemore Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in South Auckland, one of the country’s busiest units.

PKC donated $3,829.50 to donate one humidifier, a piece of equipment that plays a very important part in running the CPap machine, which is a critical device that assists preemies who are learning to breathe on their own. The humidifier warms the water which the CPap machine uses, without that function the machine wouldn’t be able operate.

Britt and Courtney were able to visit Middlemore and saw first hand what the machines look like and got a detailed demonstration from Clinical Nurse Manager, Karen Neal, who showed us where the humidifiers work along with the Cpap machine to make it not only functional but also life-saving in supporting tiny lungs to strengthen on their own, leading to better long term health outcomes.

2. Hospital grade Medela Breast Pump

$3,255.94 for the breast pump and carry case for Well Foundation/North Shore Special Care Baby Unit. The SCBU previously had one pump of this kind and Kristi Exley, the SCBU's Lactation Consultant, says this will be well used by many feeding parents, especially with the carry case making it easy to transport and give out to the parents needing it.

 2024

1. A specialist chair for Christchurch NICU that will allow for some quality bonding for preemies with their whanau, it's perfect for skin to skin (Kangaroo Cuddles) and breastfeeding.

2. Books donated to Waikato NICU from the profits of our fundraising mugs with Goodwin Ceramics

3. Breast pump parts to Waitemata Hospital for the North Shore Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU). PKC received a plaque in recognition of ongoing support.

2023

PKC donated over $3,000 to purchase a video laryngoscope intubation tool.

This piece of equipment helps doctors identify and respond to unpredicted difficult airway cases faster with fewer attempts, and confirm intubation success sooner, with greater confidence. This helps to ensure success at intubation for our vulnerable infants.

North Shore Hospital SCBU had this to say ...

"The team have been so excited to receive this piece of equipment as a donation. It was much needed by our service. This has enabled difficult intubations to be made easier, which helps alleviate additional stress on an infant that is already in a critical condition.

One infant already has been successfully intubated using this device, the doctor was so thrilled at how it performed. Having this piece of equipment made a stressful situation totally less stressful for her. There will also be opportunities to utilise it when we perform surfactant administration.

We are so very grateful – a huge thanks from the team at NSH SCBU.”

2022

Super excited to be able to share that the PKC community has purchased 10 hospital grade breast pumps for Wellington NICU

These were bought with the profits of the merch recently sold Really happy to be able to support Wellington, we regularly donate knitting to them and I love working with their team. This year they indicated that these were the items that they needed most, here’s some info below from the team:

We are very grateful to the Premmie Knitting Club for their generous donation of 10 state of-the-art breast pumps to NICU.

These pumps will ensure that all of our mothers have access to a breast pump whilst on the unit and will also provide us with the capacity to loan pumps to mothers to take home for short periods while they get breast feeding established.

This wonderful gift is a huge help in supporting our Mum’s to produce breast milk for their premature or sick babies, thus giving them the best chance of recovering and thriving. Thank you Premmie Knitting Club!

We’ll be donating to another hospital shortly, I’m still working to understand what they need most but it feels SO good to support TWO hospitals this year.

Special thanks to Justine at The Little Miracles Trust for helping to facilitate the purchase and to Jane and her team at Wellington NICU
