Supporter Shannon

World Prematurity Day is coming up on November 17th and the theme this year is ‘a strong start for a hopeful future’. At PKC, we are sharing stories from our community in the lead up including preemie babies, our wonderful knitters and supporters.

Shannon has been a loyal supporter of PKC’s fundraising merchandise over the years.

What motivates you to support PKC by buying our merchandise?
Shannon: Through my work in hospitals, I’ve walked alongside whānau who have welcomed their pēpē far earlier than expected. I’ve seen firsthand how overwhelming and emotionally demanding those early days can be. PKC remove just a little bit of the pressure from parents and caregivers, giving them space to focus on bonding and being present. That support matters more than most people realise.

I’m also motivated by my own connections through close friends whose babies have spent time in NICU and PICU. Watching their experiences reinforced just how important it is for whānau to feel cared for and supported in practical, heartfelt ways. By supporting PKC, I know that my money is put directly to supporting whānau in need.

What’s your favourite item and why?

Shannon: It’s hard to choose since all the merch is so well crafted! If I had to choose one, it would be my beautiful ceramic mug. I drink my coffee out of it every morning - it’s impeccably made!

How does marking World Prematurity Day make you feel connected to the cause?
Shannon: I think it’s so important to have a day that marks a moment where we can pause and reflect on the why behind what we do. As a supporter, I’m able to do my part in raising awareness and also celebrate the work that is done by PKC.
