Nikki’s Story of Four Preemies

World Prematurity Day is coming up on November 17th and the theme this year is ‘a strong start for a hopeful future’. At PKC, we are sharing stories from our community in the lead up including preemie babies, our wonderful knitters and supporters.

Nikki’s first born, 8 weeks after being in the NICU.

Nikki White is a long time supporter of PKC, regularly sending beautiful blankets. We always know they're Nikki's as they are always knitted or crocheted in bright colours and it's been a joy to have her as part of our community throughout the years. Nikki is a proud mum to four preterm children, two of which had stays in NICU and SCBU and she tells her story ahead of World Prematurity Day.

Tell us your story welcoming four preemie babies:
Nikki: My first born arrived at 26 weeks weighing just 738gms. He was in the NICU at National Women's for 10 weeks. He graduated to SCBU and we were able to take him home a few weeks later. I still have the teeny weeny booties and hat that he was first given. My second boy arrived at 31 weeks at 2.1kgs. So much bigger but still so tiny. He went straight to SCBU and again, we brought him home a few weeks later. My third boy 'cooked' a little longer and arrived at 36 weeks still small at 2.2 kgs. No stay in neonatal as they decided I was now a pro and we brought him home after a couple of days! Then finally my girl. She lasted until 37 weeks and was born on my birthday at 2.8kgs. Again, home after a couple of weeks.

Nikki’s first born arrived at 26 weeks weighing just 738gms. He was in the NICU at National Women's for 10 weeks.

Why do you knit for PKC?
Nikki: The knitting and crocheting I make and donate to these beautiful prems is my way of paying it forward. I adore making outfits and blankets knowing they will be treasured and keep the little mites warm and safe.
